How To Understand Your Multimeter Readings : Part 2 : Ohms Strikes Back!
Here is the infamous HK Lucas Performer 900 Active Speaker. Again! A subscriber commented on the previous video that I was lucky I had a good channel on the amplifier to compare with, which enabled me to diagnose the fault on the bad channel. Actually although a comparison was a good thing, this fault could just as easily be diagnosed in isolation. So let's take a look at the same meter readings and see how we can use them to find the fault without knowing what the correct readings should be.

Is The IC Faulty Or Is It Something Else PART 2 : Basic 400 Bi Amp Active Speaker Repair
Переглядів 3,2 тис.2 години тому
A Customer brought me a Basic 400 Bi-Amp from an Active Speaker. It is faulty but I need to find out which component is causing the problem. If an IC isn't working it's easy for a beginner to just assume it must be faulty, but a more experienced repair technician should want to dig a bit deeper before fitting a replacement. Now the parts have arrived let's see if the fault was caused by a fault...

1:39:36 - I’ve removed “Ty-Wraps” from the inside of equipment from as far back as the 80’s; but, I cut them at the entrance of the head instead of cutting off the top like you just did. That way, I could reuse the strap on a smaller bundle of wire.

The reason you had different "Diode Drop" measurements is because some of the pins to the Op-amps are shorted together on the traces (inverting to output).. I doubt those ICs are the source of this failure. I would look carefully in the areas where someone else was working (left the flux on the board). I see they used that brown glue to hold some components from moving around. At 2:07, you can see it is being used on the resistor inside the coil. The problem with that glue is after it is exposed to heat it become dark brown, brittle, conductive, and corrosive. It will eat traces, component legs, and solder connections.

Use the Mr Solder fix technique. Take some solid copper wire and bend it to fit the legs of the device being removed. Flood it and it simply drops out. Also those super wide tips are available. I didn't have the station required but i bodged it into an old soldering iron handle and wired it up to a bench supply. Also works a treat.

I bought 3 amp chips from a seller for a repair job (1 for the job, 2 for stock). In the same package were the 3 chips, but one was different. The etching/writing was not quite the same as the other 2. It turns out this chip was fake when the other 2 were good (I compared meter readings which were different from each other); same package from the same seller. Its safe to assume that these chips are faked, so be wary.

can this device be made to output an rf signal that is finely tunable in increments of a maximum 1 microvolts and that it goes as low as 1 microvolt rf output ??? It would be ideal to align FM radios where very often you'll need to inject an RF signal of between 1 to 30 microvolts ???

@learnelectronicsrepair hey Richard. I have a load of ic’s, op amps, 555 timers, Schmidt triggers, hex fets that sort of thing I bought as a job lot. I ordered one for $9US in the US. It had a US 120 volt plug. I plugged it in and it would never get hot enough to melt solder. I then read the instructions and it was rated for 240v. I tore it down and removed about half of the heat element and it works fine. The spring loaded pump is not great. I’m going to attach a vacuum pump to it and see how that works.

Did the welder work when this PCB returned to Ireland? As for basic MIG welder operation. The MIG torch has a trigger, once pressed this will open the circuit, turn on the gas solenoid (preferably a split second or so before) firing up the wire feed motor (I think these are normally 24V DC). MIG welding is typically adjusted on a rotary dial (modern inverter ones at least) with a voltage range of circa 13V-30V (smaller machines will top out around 24-25V) and then another dial will adjust the wire feed speed/amps (directly related). Amps will typically be, maybe as low as 50 at the minimum, never really looked, up to 300-350amps. Maybe more for a monster machine. Most smaller single phase machines top out at 150-180 amps on a 10A supply, 180-200 amps on a 15A supply. We have a couple of 250A machines at work on 15A supplies but they are never high, typically need a 25A+ supply to run flat out.

When probing the op amp pins there were differences in the input pins(32:10). There were clearly units which were visibly wired as unity gain buffers and there the inverting inputs are connected to outputs. That explains the different behaviour of the pins.

That series of DELL uses the same connector for the PSU, but has a different pinout! Only the DELL PSU will work with it, or you have to modify the connector cabling of one of your test supply to be used with a DELL. I made the same mistake trying to use a DELL PSU for another normal motherboard, but luckily it just shorts out and go to failsafe mode without destroying the MB or PSU. As another one below noted, it looks like the same DDR buffer IC was used in the DELL? Brings back memories - had one of these as my work PC around year 2000🙂

Im sure you've heard it before but you should get a knoppix cd. That way tou can test all parts of the board even if windows is corrupt

I think you may need to find a new source of PCs. Your guy has run out of good stuff. So it is time to move on. Maybe there's a recycle center on the island? I would definitely be looking for a new supply.

@LearnElectronicsRepair any simple way to reuse semi retired laptop batteries for alternative light powering as they would be way better but no longer have charging dock. I now have two sitting around gathering dust and I have too many LED mini lights chewing thru AAA batteries.
